That is to say, if those playing Demon’s Souls now for the first time have an easier experience, it won’t be by much. There are no “bonfires” near fog gates or checkpoints added, or anything of that nature. The Remake is actually closer to a Remaster than a Remake, and probably would be called one if the graphics were not completely overhauled. And while that should be mostly good news to Demon’s Souls veterans out there looking to pick this up and play with the noobies, there were some missed opportunities here that I will mention. The mechanics of Character Tendency and World Tendency, which are barely touched upon in Bloodborne, do not exist in other Souls games and cause each Archstone to change based on your current Tendency. Events happen, enemies move, new enemies appear, NPC quests spawn, and more depending on what actions you have taken in your game world.

This Walkthrough is written in the order that we found simplest, but you’re certainly encouraged to experiment and to see if something else works better for you. Some of it will also come down to how you level up your character, as there are times when enemies might be simple for a melee fighter but difficult for a magic user (and vice-versa). The first option is to loot it off a Phosphorescent Slug past the fog will in the Swamp of Sorrow. The slug can be found lingering on an island past Selen Vinald. The second way is to kill Selen Vinland, in human form, and loot it off her corpse. This unique armor set is exclusively available if you own the digital deluxe edition of the game and cannot be found without it.

There are New Game+ options, special items to hunt down, and the ability to create characters that are completely different from one another. Playing through Demon’s Souls in the typical hack-and-slash fashion is plenty fun, but playing through with a focus on magic instead is an entirely different experience. Something else that will keep Demon’s Souls fans from returning to the PS3 original is the new game’s active online community. Demon’s Souls players can also leave messages for each other, either to be helpful or to trick players into traps.

The Blue-Eyed Knights drop a great weapon for the beginning of the game, the claymore. This strength weapon requires a good amount of levels to use, but it is well worth it. So, the idea of paying $570 to experience a title that is just an old game with a fresh coat of paint may seem somewhat excessive, especially when the original title can be played for just a fraction of said cost.

Boss #10 – Old Monk

The Demon’s Souls remake expands on that vengeful nature with the souls-echo idea. When you die, the souls you gained by killing enemies are held by the enemy who killed you, or put on the spot where you died to be reclaimed. If you die again without reclaiming those souls, they are gone for good. It stunts your growth, and the further you get in the game, the more souls it takes to level up and buy gear, forcing players to stay alive longer and hold onto those precious souls to get stronger. By not doing well, you completely stunt your ability to get better through in-game power-ups. But it also forces players to simply learn the game, like all those retro titles before it.
