These reference Doko Demo Issyo, released for the device in 1999 only in Japan, and developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It’s most famous for starring Toro Inoue, also known as the Sony Cat, who wishes to become human. At the end of the short side-path to the Multi-Tap, you’ll spot a Bot with a flashlight stalked by a Bot in a straw hat. This references 2003’s Siren on PS3, developed by SCE Japan Studio.
On the right-hand side of the rocket launch pad at the end of Turbo Trail, you’ll find a Bot with yellow ears, a tiny bot on its back, and nuts and bolts in its arms alongside a wrench. This references the 2002’s Ratchet & Clank on PS2, developed by Insomniac Games. The wrench refers to Ratchet’s melee weapon, the Omniwrench, while the Bolts refers to the currency in the Ratchet games. After the second use of the Hang Glider, on the left you’ll find a massive sword stuck in the ground.

With the way forward forged, return to the start of the level and, facing backwards to where you first started, look to the left side of the archway to spot some cables in the ground. Pull them to get a canister, which has a tiny net inside (like from Ape Escape!). Special Bots are hidden Bots scattered throughout each biome of Astro’s Playroom, and were added in the lead-up to the sequel, Astro Bot.
Some players would describe this project as a tech demo for the PlayStation 5, and while it won’t be false, Astro’s Playroom is more than that. The game is broken down into multiple levels, and each one stands out in its unique way. In case you’re having trouble unlocking the four special bots, make sure to check out Astro’s Playroom’s community on PSNProfiles, which has solutions to the most common issues players are facing. If you’re new to platformers, or video games in general, you may find yourself rushing in and dying quickly for seemingly no reason. If this happens a lot to you, try stepping back and observing the obstacles ahead.
That’s not very much content — but I still have well over half of the game’s collectibles left to discover, which could easily double the amount of time spent if I wanted to go for the platinum. I used this example last time and I like to explain that with how precise the haptics are here I can actually tell the difference between when Astro walks on wood, metal, glass, and so on. It’s really mind-blowing and is frankly impossible to articulate in words. And the way the adaptive triggers provide resistance for pulling down on things like a robot spring or the string of a bow is wonderful. The DualSense is the most innovative update to game controller technology since the debut of the analog stick.
Often, when they come back relaxed, they’re more likely to find success. They can be found in every level in the game, except for the Network Speed Run levels. The Astro Playroom Trophy List includes 31 bronze‚ 14 silver‚ 5 gold‚ and 1 platinum trophy‚ totaling 51 achievements. Categories range from story completion to collectibles and challenges‚ with some being secret trophies.
Rescuing all four special bots rewards you with the “Four The Players” trophy‚ adding a layer of challenge and nostalgia to your platinum journey. Each bot’s location and method of rescue is cleverly integrated into the game’s design. Boss Fight Trophies in Astro Playroom are unlocked by defeating specific bosses in various levels. These encounters are scattered across the game’s worlds‚ such as the T-Rex in “Casey’s Toybox” or the final boss in the “Playroom.” Each boss fight is unique and requires mastering Astro’s abilities.
Jump onto the platform with the Coin, then jump up to the Wires and tug them to reveal yet more platforms. OK 8386 view this game as a culmination of the PlayStation legacy after Astro’s Playroom featured almost every console generation, accessories, characters, and iconic locations. There are environmental puzzles that must be solved by pulling certain wires to open new platforms to jump on to make the ascent much more convenient. What this means is that if you, say, reach a Checkpoint with 10 Coins, then pick up 5 more Coins, then die, you’ll respawn at the Checkpoint back at 10 Coins, and need to collect the other 5 Coins again.
This zone’s suit is the Rocket Suit, which you control with the Adaptive Triggers and the SIXAXIS tilt controls. I’ve seen uses like blowing into a mic to get an in-game fan to move since the days of the original Nintendo DS, so it doesn’t necessarily bring anything all that fresh here. That being said, the fact that my biggest complaint is just that I really wish there was more, is almost more of a compliment. Astro’s Playroom is an extremely well-designed platformer and getting access to it for free feels like a steal. Even as-is I’d wager Sony could easily charge $20 and most people would happily pay that without feeling ripped off at all. Usually rumble tends to fade away and eventually becomes something I stop noticing.
Following Astro’s Playroom (2020), it is the fifth overall installment in the Astro Bot series and marks Team Asobi’s first game developed since its separation from Japan Studio. Finally, as much as I adore Astro’s cute nature and attention to detail with its celebration of PlayStation nostalgia, I would have loved a more considered narrative on top of all that. There was once a time when pack-in bundled games were regarded as the very best games available for that new console. You bought a Super Nintendo to play Super Mario World because it came in the box.
When you get to the first silver Bounce Pillow, use it to get on top of the wall, then drop off the other side. This references 2008’s LittleBigPlanet on PS3, developed by Media Molecule. The globe is LittleBigPlanet itself, covered in badges that represent levels from players around the world. After reaching the first Checkpoint in Caching Caves, look for a box frame structure in the ground you can drop into. In addition to a Puzzle Piece, you’ll see a Bot prancing down a line and clearing various shape-based obstacles. Vib-Ribbon was unique in that it loaded entirely into the PS1’s RAM, allowing players to insert their own music CDs to play levels to.

Every function and feature of the controller gets a little time in the spotlight. Pervasive and distinct rumble effects steal the show, from the tiny sensation of Astro’s footsteps to thundering moments like an Indiana Jones-style boulder chase. The triggers offer resistance as you charge your jumps in a frog suit or operate the levers on a toy machine. Sliding your finger across the touchpad lets you direct your movement as you roll around in a ball.
These collectibles are hidden across levels‚ requiring exploration and attention to detail. There are 24 artifacts (6 in each world) and 40 puzzle pieces spread across four worlds. Collecting these not only earns trophies but also unlocks special content. These trophies encourage players to thoroughly explore each level‚ making the journey to 100% completion both rewarding and engaging. Astro once again controls really well in this game although our adorable robot friend doesn’t have as deep a move set as a certain plumber does. Astro can jump, punch enemies, and perform a spin attack but that’s about it for the main move set.
Puzzle Piece 1/4 – When climbing in the monkey suit, when you go up the first moving handhold there will be a yellow handhold on the left you can grab, which reveals a new area. Puzzle Piece 4/4 – After crossing the bridge, instead of jumping up towards the end of the level, go down to the left to find this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 3/4 – To proceed you are supposed to use the throwable item across the gap towards the next checkpoint. Instead, throw it at both of the moving areas to the right to reveal this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 3/4 – After the next checkpoint where you have another large ramp to slide down, this puzzle piece is up to the left across two breakable platforms. Artifact 2/2 “PS Eye Toy Camera” – On the right side of the area, defeat the enemies and jump across the small platforms to the one with the two coins and the wire pull on it, which contains this artifact.
